The pubic is invited to our meeting on November 9th for a talk by Shirley Franklin, the former two-term Mayor of Atlanta and current visiting professor at the LBJ School of Public Affairs. Franklin, who served as Mayor from 2002 to 2010, was the first female to hold the post and became the first African-American woman to be elected mayor of any major Southern city. She has received the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award, was named by Time Magazine as one of the top five mayors in the United States, and honored as Governing Magazine’s 2004 Public Official of the Year. In addition to her position as the Barbara Jordan Visiting Professor of Ethics and Political Values at the LBJ School, Franklin is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights.

Dr. Franklin will discuss “what's next” as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of President Johnson's landmark legislation - Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts and the War on Poverty.
